Jean Carolus

(1837-1917)

Born in Belgium he was a pupil of the artist Joseph Navez, a very important painter of his period and a Master of the British Academy.
Carolus was a painter of figure subjects producing scenes usually of the 18th century.

He is known to have exhibited between 1867 and 1872 but nothing appears after this period so it is presumed that he painted for private collections.
In his paintings there is a graciousness and elegance giving us an insight into the lifestyles and costumes of the period.
