P J E Castan

(1817-1865)

Pierre Jean Castan was born in Toulouse in 1817.He was a pupil of Theodore Gerard and M M Drolling. He painted portraits but his best
works at their most beautiful are where he depicted people in simple and poetic situations.

He did paint interior subjects as well. His style changed and some of his works show very tight and detailed brush work and in latter years this
changed and the influence of John Constable's impressionism began to be felt. He lived and worked around Paris for most of his life exhibiting in
the Paris Salon. The museum of Nimes has a work by him on permanent display.
