Born in Scotland of English parents in 1941, David Dipnall spent most of his childhood in the Portsmouth area and received his education at Portsmouth Grammar School.

He decided to pursue Engineering Design as a career and held various positions in product design in a variety of industries spanning a period of about thirteen years until 1968 when he and his wife, Audrey, decided to travel the world. He left England in September 1968 and drove overland to India, then on by various means to arrive in Australia in January 1969.

Australia became their home for the next five years during which time he worked initially in product design, but, later found an opportunity to join the teaching staff at Geelong Grammar School. He remained there until early in 1974, teaching design, art and craft, photography etc. He returned to England in the summer of 1974 with his wife and son after deciding to become a professional artist in response to the demand for his work as an amateur.

His portrayal of the English pastoral scene in a realistic manner, with more than a hint of Impressionism, soon found an enthusiastic market and before very long, demand for his work exceeded his output. This led to him publishing his work as Fine Art prints.

David Dipnall's oil paintings are recognised both nationally and internationally as epitomising all that is endearing about the English pastoral scene. His portrayal of English landscapes are characterised by a sense of tranquillity and order, a feeling that nature and man have worked together in harmony.

He frequently acknowledges the presence of man by including a gate or stile, a pathway or rural habitation in his pictures, but always it is Nature herself that is the real subject.

Examples of his work reside in collections in Germany, the United States, Canada, Australia and Tasmania.
