F.W. Hulme was born on 22nd October, 1816 in Swinton, Yorkshire and died in London on November 14th 1884. Originally he had been a pupil of a well known Yorkshire artist and he went to London in 1844 at the age of 28.

His early works consisted of designs for engravings but having a real penchant for art, he began a career in the oil medium which met with considerable success.

The Victorian era welcomed many successful people many of whom bought country houses and estates which initiated a large demand for landscape painting and spawned many new landscape artists. These pictures were exhibited at the Royal Academy every year.

The year after he arrived in London Hulme’s works were accepted by the Academy and for the next forty years he showed there regularly as well as The British Institute and The Suffolk Street Society amongst other exhibitions.

He is represented in the Museum of Montreal as well as Liverpool & Leicester.
