Pierre de Clausade was born in Paris on 15th April 1910, but he did not start painting seriously until 1941, at the age of 31. The desire to express himself in this medium had occurred to him many years earlier, but he felt that in addition to a thorough knowledge of his craft, he must make endless experiments in an effort to develop an entirely personal method of expression. Above all he wished to avoid becoming a mere follower in the wake of his distinguished contemporaries such as Braque, Matisse and Picasso. In the end he used only as much of the lessons of the past and present as would enable him to realise his objective. At last, after trial and failure, he felt sufficiently confident to hold his first exhibition in Paris during 1943. The success was phenomenal and as a result further shows were held during the following years. He exhibited regularly at the Societe des Beaux Artes and became a member of the Salon d'Hiver.

His fame spread abroad and he was soon exhibiting regularly as far afield as Rio de Janiero, Boston, New York and Jordan. His paintings of this period entered many distinguished collections, including that of the Brazilian Ambassador and the Boston and Minneapolis Museum of Fine Art.

He continued to develop his technique, aiming for perfection and the wish to satisfy his analytical artistic consciousness. Always a great lover of music and literature, he won the Prix de Poesie, and there are many who see the reflection of music in his particularly personal painting. He delights us with his creation of a world of solitude, which expresses the full beauty of nature in all its aspects, particularly the enchantment and inspiration of great cloud masses. He takes us to places off the beaten track, where we can refresh our thoughts in the peace, and above all, the quietness of his pictures.

Pierre de Clausade was awarded the great honour of the Medaille d'Argent by the jury of the Paris Salon in January 1953. He died in 1976 at the early age of 66 and with him passed one of the most dramatic and striking aspects of self-expression the world of art had seen for many years.
