Richard Hume Lancaster was a painter of seascapes and genre who was born in London in 1773 and died at Warnford, Hampshire on 25th June 1853. He was a member of the Society of British Artists and honorary exhibitor at The Royal Academy.

This painter, a scholar of Merton, Oxford and Vicar of Warnford was a gifted amateur, his work being equal to that of most professional artists. He painted scenes in many parts...Yorkshire, Devon, Oxford, Scotland and France and also in the Lake District and Wales where his strong depiction of mountains and vales may rank with the best.

For 26 years before his death Lancaster ceased to paint or at least, to exhibit his work, 1827 being the date of his last appearance at The Royal Academy where he had shown 33 paintings. 31 paintings were shown at The British Institute and 78 at the Suffolk Street Galleries.
